A spectacular start of the 2024 Regatta season at Fraglia Vela Malcesine! Almost 350 boats on the starting line of the Ilca Youth Easter Meeting, the classic Easter event for the Ilca 4 and Ilca 6 classes.

Lorenzo Ghirotti and Antonio Pascali are the winners in the ILCA 4 and ILCA 6 classes respectively.

Great participation also for this 11th edition, with 25 nations represented from all over the world. The most present nations were Denmark, Germany, the Scandinavian countries and of course Italy. As well as numerous non-European athletes from Australia, the United States, Brazil and Bermuda.

Due to the difficult weather conditions, it was not possible to complete the program which included 10 races to be run over the four days. 6 races were completed by the ILCA 4 class, while 7 by the ILCA 6, who had the opportunity to race in the Gold and Silver fleets on the last day of the regatta.

Difficult weather conditions, with rain and Peler even during the afternoon, characterized the first three days of the regatta.

Heavy rain and light wind, which then dropped during the afternoon, forced the Race Committee to end the first day with nothing happening for all four fleets.

Two races were completed by all four fleets on the second day of racing. Regular departure at 1pm, despite the weather conditions with rain and an afternoon Peler of around 10 knots, which then dropped to such an extent that no further regattas were possible for the day.

In the Ilca 4 class, Erik Scheidt (Fraglia Vela Riva) moved to the top of the rankings with a 1st and 2nd place. Followed by Vanja Ramm-Ericson from Sweden and the American Davide Bazzoni, who both finish tied with two victories of the day!

The Swede Julius Graudums ends the day in 1st place in the overall rankings of the Ilca 6 class, followed by the Belgian Anders Bultnyck. Federico Cittadini (Club Vela Portocivitanova) closes the provisional podium.

Two races completed for the ILCA 6 class also on the third day of the regatta, which allowed the discard to take over and compete in the Gold and Silver fleets on the last day of the regatta. Last year’s winner Antonio Pascali (Fraglia Vela Riva) takes the lead in the ranking, followed by Dario Burlando (Yacht Club Italiano) and Federico Cittadini (Club Vela Portocivitanova).

A single race instead for the ILCA 4 class, keeping the provisional ranking unchanged.

To conclude the regatta in the best possible way, first warning signal at 9 am with 3 races completed by all four fleets, which crowned Lorenzo Ghirotti (Fraglia Vela Riva) as the overall winner in the ILCA 4 fleet. Second step of the podium for the Hungarian Benedek Heder, followed by Erik Scheidt (Fraglia Vela Riva). Amber Knape from Holland instead takes the first place in the U16 women ranking. Home athlete Matteo Bulgarini closes the regatta at the foot of the podium (4th).

Antonio Pascali (Fraglia Vela Riva) triumphs in the ILCA 6 class with five victories of the day, followed by Dario Burlando (Yacht Club Italiano). Alessandro Cirinei (Fraglia Vela Riva) closes the podium. 1st female U17 Hanna Rogowska, 1st female U19 Isabella Mendoza Cabezas, 1st female U21 Giorgia Bonalana (Fraglia Vela Riva).

Achieving an Olympics has always been one of the greatest achievements for a sailor’s career and among the greatest satisfactions for the club that started this dream.

Giorgia Bertuzzi, class 2001 from Malcesine, from her first Optimist outings here at Fraglia together with her first coach Ylena Carcasole, imagined participating.

Today that she has grown up and this image is taking shape, she wants to come back with a medal!

A big fan of skiing and climbing, Giorgia comes from a sporting family but never had roots in the sailing world.

At age six she started in Optimist here at fraglia and then transitioned to 420. She never stopped in the face of any obstacle and moved forward with great tenacity. She has always had a great physicality and agility that has allowed her to express herself at her best in the role of bowwoman until she landed in FX.

With the help of Filippo Togni, the opportunity was created to follow and coach this class right here in our club. After getting into the boat with different athletes she always looked for ways to reinvent herself and find new opportunities until the lucky meeting with Jana Germani in 2020. Both athletes are now enlisted in the Navy MARINA MILITARE.

Day after day, they turn their passion into a job, managing in a short time to take many satisfactions.

They win a world u23 gold and two continental podiums.

The silver won in Vilamoura in 2023, gives them the Olympic card for the Paris Games. And a few weeks ago the big news, the pair is officially chosen to represent Italy in the 49er FX class at this year’s Olympics (sailing will be held in Marseille, August 2024).

Raised among the five-ring stories of the many Olympians present in Malcesine. We proudly remember the many athletes who grew up right here, helping to shape the history of us and Italy through their participation in the Olympics:

Fraglia Vela Malcesine’s 2023 season has come to a close, and we are excited to share the amazing accomplishments and successes we have achieved this year! In this newsletter you will find an incredible summary of the season just ended.

20 regattas organized over the course of the year for 84 days of racing, 205 water races held and over 2,200 athletes registered!
22,500 total attendance that passed through our club during those days taking advantage of the refreshment point and services offered.

4 competitive teams with a total of 50 students who traveled between Italy and Europe during the season, covering a combined total of 90,000 km with their vans.
There were 11 OPTIMIST trips, 10 ILCA trips and 7 for the Techno293 and IqFoil team.

1,123 athletes from 35 different nations of the world who, came to train at FVM with an average stay of 11 days. Total attendance during the year 7,766!

Sailing School Children and Youth

290 children were initiated into our sport this year, with a total of 160 Sailing courses and 92 Windsurfing courses for the younger ones. All carried out in 10 weeks with a total of 350 hours on the water. 32, on the other hand, were the Youth courses held over 9 weeks and with a total of 140 hours on the water.

Adult and Private Sailing School

720 students took to the water including: private lessons with 330 students in 665 hours, Sailings with Skipper and a total of 170 people on board divided into 149 hours, 6 Team Building groups for 83 guests who in a total of 35 hours gained experience aboard our boats, and last but not least, 615 hours of Professional Coaching for 136 sailors and windsurfers.

FVM Sports Activities: Rental and Gymnasium

In its first year, the FVM Water Center rental, with a combined total of 380 hours of water activities, ended the season with 189 rentals including dinghies, windsurfs, sup and kayaks.In 298 days of annual operation of the FVM GYM gymnasium, 10,538 accesses were recorded!

A great regatta season during this 2023 at Fraglia Vela Malcesine!

The 20 regattas held between March and November, which totaled more than 80 days on the water, were attended by more than 2,200 racers from all over the world. The zonal, national and international events brought about 22,500 daily and hotel admissions to Malcesine, divided between family members, companions, coaches and racers.
Among this season’s most important events were the Ilca Youth Easter Meeting with nearly 350 athletes registered, the 10th edition of Foiling Week, the Ufo22 European Championship, the H-Boat World Championship, the Simone Lombardi Trophy, with 450 children on the starting line, and the two stages of the TF35 class, which brought the prestigious and technological 35-foot flying catamarans to Fraglia Vela Malcesine for the second year in a row.
50 athletes from the 4 competitive teams sailed a total of 90,000 km on Italian and European roads during the season. 11 the OPTIMIST transfers, 10 the ILCA ones and 7 for the Techno293 and IqFoil teams.

16 FVM Awardees who distinguished themselves during the year between Italian, European and World Championships of which 9 mentioned in the 2023 Gold Roll.

298 GYM FVM gym days for who knows how many kilometers run on the treadmills!!!

WE ARE WORKING FOR YOU!

It was time to renovate and offer everyone who attends our club a continuously improving facility!

From November to February 2024, renovations and re-styling of the new locker rooms and restrooms at Fraglia Vela Malcesine and Marina Navene will be underway.

A beautiful project carried out by Studio Benedetti of Malcesine.

Upgrades will be made to the two locker rooms dedicated to FVM members, Marina Navene and club guests (men and women), as well as to the two FVM GYM locker rooms (men and women).

Throughout the construction period, temporary facilities complete with sanitary facilities and showers will be set up on the outside yard (adjacent to the entrance to the gymnasium).
This will allow all members and subscribers to be able to continue to take advantage of our facilities and gymnasium.

After the great success of the 2022 Edition, the traditional Easter regatta dedicated to the Ilca 4 and Ilca 6 classes returns to Malcesine. From the 5^th to the 8^th of April 2023, 348 athletes were lined up on the starting line of the Ilca Youth Easter Meeting. Vassilis Koukoudis and Antonio Pascali are the winners respectively in the ILCA 4 and ILCA 6 class.

For this 10th edition, every record of participants was broken, with 28 countries from all over the world represented. The most represented countries were Denmark, Germany, the Scandinavian countries and of course Italy. In addition to several non-European athletes from Australia, the United States, Brazil and the United Arab Emirates.

The entire program was completed in the 4 days of regatta with 10 races to crown the Ilca youth champion of the Easter Meeting!

THE RACE

The Ora wind was the undisputed protagonist of all 4 days of the event, blowing constantly every afternoon with an average of 10-15 knots.

The Italian sailor Antonio Pascali (Fraglia Vela Riva), took the first position of the ILCA 6 fleet from the first day and never left it again, with an excellent consistency in the qualifying races and a 5th and 4th place on the last day. Erik Norlen (Royal Swedish Yacht Club) won the hard-fought fight for second place. Massimiliano Antoniazzi (Yacht Club Adriaco) closes the podium. Isabella Mendoza Cabezas (Key Biscayne Yacht Club) 1^st female U19.

The last day of races was concluded in the best possible way by making a regular start at 12 o’clock with 2 races for the fleets divided into gold and silver, which crowned the Greek sailor Vassilis Koukoudis (ANOG) overall winner in the ILCA 4 fleet. Second step of the podium for the Ukrainian Dmytro Karabadzhak tying the same points with the 3^rd classified Lorenzo Ghirotti (Fraglia Vela Riva). Nika Fornazar from Croatia took the 1^st place for women U16.

Simone Salvà is third overall at Moth World Championship!
From 27 November to 4 December, in Buenos Aires, 13 races to win the Moth 2022 title.
Simone made good competition from the beginning, with a second place achieved in the Pre-World Championship. Then he best interprets the Race area and the specific conditions of the Rio de la Plata, always maintaining the top of the ranking.
In second place among Italians and first Master ranking Francesco Bruni. The prestigious Cup goes from the Australian Slingsby, last year winner in Malcesine, to the English Fletcher-Scott.
The Fraglia Vela Malcesine Members, the Australian Scott Webster, the German Kai Adolph and the Suiss Viktor Gal end their World Championship respectively at 15th,16th and 38th place.
